ORGANISERS of the 29th Stroud half marathon are expecting a big entry for this year’s race on Sunday October 24th .
“If current figures are anything to go by, we are set to smash the number of entries recorded last year,” said race director Chris Bourne.
“In the run up to London 2012 running fever seems to be gripping the people of Gloucestershire and beyond.
“The half marathon course, while being slightly undulating, is good for runners of all levels. Be you a competitive club, social or fun runner, it’s the race for you. We find that many runners who are looking to achieve fast times choose Stroud half marathon due to the course’s layout.”
Bourne is optimistic that the race, which is sponsored by The Stroud & Swindon Building Society and supported by Griffiths Marshall Chartered Accountants of Gloucester , Dairy Crest (SevernSide) and Trailblazer PR, will see over 2,500 runners line up making it the biggest in the county.
The race, which will commence at 10.00am, will start and finish at Marling School . A ‘Junior Silver Mile Race’ for younger competitors from the ages of 8 – 16 will also be held. This race will start approximately 15 minutes after the start of the half marathon.

Bristol & West’s fab trio cruise to victory

Monday, September 27th, 2010

BRISTOL & West AC’s Under 17 women’s team romped to a thumping victory in the Midland Counties Young Athletes Road Relays at Sutton Park, Birmingham, yesterday.
The trio of Olivia Sadler, Annabel Gummow and Naomi Speake were a class apart as they finished over two minutes clear of Worcester AC with Team Bath AC a surprise third.
“Olivia started the ball rolling and sensibly stuck with the leading pack of five going up the long hill,” said team manager Dave Taylor.
“Feeling good at the top Olivia and Charnwood’s Sophie Coldwell decided to push on with Olivia just losing contact over the last 600m.
“A 12 seconds deficit was nothing for Annabel Gummow, who turned in the fastest leg of the day recording a time of 13:08 to hand over a 1 minute 42 second lead to Naomi.
“With just the lead motorcycle for company Naomi sensed that a fast time was on the cards and pushed all the way, managing to extend the lead a further 26 seconds.”
Taylor wondered if the winning time of 41mins 28secs was a course record – I’ll look into that.
